Buckingham-Gordon Building Façade Restoration
Greeley, Weld County, Colorado
SHF Project # 01-02-078
Built in 1907, the Buckingham Gordon Building at 810-816 9th Street served
as home for many important businesses in downtown Greeley, including the
Clough Furniture Company, Greeley Dry Goods Company, Hibbs Clothing Company,
and the Home Light and Power Company.
The
building was remodeled several times, including a 1941 addition
of black spandrel glass to the first story and the addition of white
Fiberglas exterior
panels across the upper story. At some later date, moss rock
replaced the spandrel glass. In 1977, the Home Light and Power Company
restored the brick
on the east half of the Buckingham Gordon Block, but the original
façade of the west half of the building, occupied by United Way of Weld
County, remained hidden under non-original materials.
Investigations by Aller-Lingle Architects (Ft. Collins), funded by a
planning grant from the State Historical Fund, determined that most of
the historic fabric, including upper story windows and masonry details,
remained in place.
With a $93,700 grant from the State Historical Fund, United Way of Weld
County worked with Aller-Lingle Architects and Thissen Construction (Greeley)
to restore the façade of 816 9th Street to its historic appearance
and prominence in downtown Greeley.
