CHAFFEE COUNTY
Heister House
102 Poncha Blvd., Salida
National Register, 10/8/2008, 5CF.2366
Constructed over the years from 1943 to 1954, the Heister House is an excellent
example of the Moderne
style. Elements typical of the style seen on the house
include a flat roof, smooth stucco veneer, rounded corners, porthole openings,
glass block, and a curved metal canopy. Designed by owners Elwood and Frances
Heister, the foundation for the entire house was poured and the west portion
completed in 1943. The family lived in the west half as work continued on the
east side. The eastern portion saw completion in 1954. It was at this time the
two sections were coated with stucco and the house took on the appearance of
oderne style. The house retains all of the original elements to this day.

RIO GRANDE COUNTY
Spruce Lodge
29431 West US Hwy. 160, South Fork
National Register, 10/21/2008, 5RN.1043
The 1927 Spruce Lodge conveys the important role played by the Galbreath Tie
and Timber Company in the existence and longevity of the South Fork community.
The Galbreath Hotel formed an important part of the commercial complex built by
brothers Charles and O.S. Galbreath that served as the early basis of the South
Fork economy. Counted among Colorado’s original lumber barons, the Galbreths
utilized the hotel to conduct business, and once deals were made, they utilized
the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad to ship their lumber throughout the
San Luis Valley and the western United States. In addition to the operation of the
Rustic-style hotel,
the Galbreaths shipped produce and owned a general merchandise store. The town
owes much of its early prosperity to the brothers and their business enterprises.
