*.Find out what a file search is?

A file search is a way to obtain information on specific sites that are located in a specific area, or meet some sort of specified criteria.  When the area has been defined, or the criteria specified, that data is used to query Colorado's Cultural Resources Database, which contains information on over 130,000 archaeological, historical and paleontological sites.  Those sites that fall within the specified area, or meet the criteria, are returned and passed on to the requestor.

*.Request a file search?

The information that is needed to process any such request is a legal location of Township Range and Section, for the area of undertaking.  If you are in an urban area, a street address, or listing of all of the streets, along with their address ranges, should be sent as well as the aforementioned legal location.  You may:

  • call in this data to 303.866.5216,
  • fax it to 303.866.2711
  • e-mail it to file.search@chs.state.co.us.
  • or mail it (1300 Broadway, Denver, CO 80203)
  • If you are faxing or mailing the request please use a File Access Request form.  It can be downloaded in PDF or Word formats.  Staff will complete the form for requests received over the phone or via e-mail.

There is a fee of $8.00 for each section and $20.00 for custom searches.  These fees do not apply to research.

*.Find out in what format I can receive the information?

The results of a file search can be mailed to you, or emailed to you.  If you chose the electronic version you will get an ASCII file that you may open in just about any program, although database or spreadsheet programs are the most helpful.

    *.Request a site number(s)?

To request site number(s) please contact 303.866.5216 or the front desk at 303.866.3395.

    *.Contact someone for additional information?

    Contact either 303.866.5216 or 303.866.3395.

    *.Request exact location information?

Because of their sensitive nature, many of the files housed in OAHP are exempt from the Freedom of Information Act.  If your request encompasses some of these sites, all information on the site, except the exact location will be released to you.  If it is critical that you obtain the locational data, please contact our office and provisions may be made.
